Happy Father's Day!

Christopher Buckley & Me

In honor of Father’s Day, I suggest you give Christopher Buckley’s memoir, Losing Mum and Pup, a read. It is a moving and revealing look into his life as the only child of William F. Buckley, the father of the modern conservative movement and Patricia Taylor Buckley, one of New York’s most colorful and glamorous socialites.

With great humor and poignancy, Christopher chronicles what it was like losing them both within the space of a year. His account is at once funny and sad, and gives us a rarefied view into the lives of such an iconoclastic couple but most of all, I think it does a great job of capturing the complexity of the relationships that we all have with our parents.

To toast the fathers in your life, here’s my recipe for the Sidecar, which I think that Bill Buckley would’ve loved.

To my own beloved dad Jimmy Powers, who I miss everyday, TOY (thinking of you)!

Sidecar

Serves 1

1 ½ ounces brandy ½ ounce triple sec ½ ounce freshly squeezed lemon or lime juice

Combine all the ingredients in a shaker filled with ice, shake well, and strain into a cocktail glass.

Enjoy!

Introducing Teddy K

Miss Sweet Pea, Teddy K and Mr. Pickles lounging in the nook Meet Teddy Kennedy, the newest addition to our family. When we saw him at The Mutt Movement booth at the Larchmont Farmer’s Market, we just fell for him. Teddy has a lot of energy and is such a love –he loves people and people love him –kind of like his namesake, I think. Mr. Pickles has a playmate and Sweet Pea finally has some peace.
